The Magician’s Table is a short documentary on Brujita Skincare. In Tarot, The Magician (card) is interpreted with energy, potential, and the manifestation of one's desires; the card symbolizes the meetings of the physical and spiritual worlds. Just like The Magician, Brujita uses both the physical and spiritual when making products and creating the world of Brujita. In The Magicians Table, we get an in depth look into the creation and process of the brand. How Tarot & Magic are incorporated into our everyday rituals and our growth through the pandemic.

“Before she had me, my mom had a couple other things growing inside her. First, she had an ovarian cyst. That painful growth ruptured when she was 23. At 24, a teratoma formed inside her, taking over her left ovary. Both had to be surgically removed from her womb. I didn’t know what a teratoma was until she shared these stories with me. I always thought it sounded like an earthen material, or mythical creature. Maybe an ancient ritual. As a kid trying to embody and imagine my mother’s pain, I became obsessed with that idea— parts of another person floating inside you with no context, no real connective tissue. A tiny universe of wandering hair, nails, eyeballs, teeth. Almost a whole being. But not quite.”

Arianne is a queer interdisciplinary filmmaker of Indonesian, Filipinx, Lebanese, Polish and Italian descent. Born in Trenton, NJ, Arianne moved 11 times before she was 10 years old. She has spent the majority of her life living in New York and California, currently lives in Los Angeles, and loves being able to call more than one place home.
“Don’t Do That, It’s Bad Luck” navigates themes of identity, erasure, preservation, and place-making through alchemy, cast molds, toxic materials, and mass produced novelties.
Arianne has created an alternate reality QVC channel and intimate product showroom selling her latest imaginary invention: Teratomite— the material of the future.
Teratomite’s ingredients are drawn from passed-down nostalgia and personal memory— narratives inherited from the matriarchs of her family, cultural / superstitious iconography, and food morsels relevant to each portion of her mixed background.
These impulses manifest into a multi-sensory dream state, forming a three-dimensional altar which the viewer can physically and emotionally inhabit.
This installation marks Arianne’s first ever gallery show. As a souvenir of this personal milestone, the artist has produced a limited run of mini Teratomite Nitelites which are available for purchase.
